Department of Herbal medicine KNUST has gained cumulative popularity in today’s medical practice. Herbal medicine has been used for thousands of years to treat various ailments and promote overall health and wellness. in recent years, there has been a growing interst in herbal medicine and its potential benefits. As a result, many medical institutions have started to offer departments dedicated to herbal medicine.

Department of Herbal Medicine KNUST focus on the study and application of herbs for treating and preventing illness, as well as promoting natural and holistic approaches to healthcare. This has led to a more integrated approach to healthcare that utilizes both modern medicine and traditional.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines herbal medicine as a practice which includes herbs, herbal materials, herbal preparations and finished herbal products, that contains as active ingredients parts of plants or other plants, or other plant material or combinations. These herbs are derived from plant parts such as leaves, stems, flowers, roots, and seeds. Herbals drugs contain active ingredients plant materials in the processed with certain excipients e.g. dilutions, solvents or preservatives. These active ingredients protect plants from damage and disease and contribute to plants aroma, flavor and color.

Herbal medicine has been used for centuries to treat a variety of health issues. While some people may still view it as an alternative or unconventional from of treatment, many herbal remedies have been proven to be effective and widely accepted in the medical community. From echinacea to chamomile, there are many herbs that can help with everything from reducing inflammation to improving digestion. it’s important to note that herbal medicine should always be used under the guidance of a qualified healthcare practitioner.

The program present at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology is a four-year degree program BSc. Herbal Medicine at the faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Science, KNUST. After a successful completion graduates undergo a two-year internship program in three rotations. First year mandatory national service followed by six months internship training at Centre for Plant Medicine Research (CPMR) and Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital (TQMH). At the end of the internship, the medical Herbalists must pass a professional examination and go through induction to enable them to practice.

  • Medical Herbalists are to promote wellness, prevent and treat illness and support the body’s natural healing processes.
  • To provide natural healing, optimize bodily functions and prevent future illnesses.
  • To provide gentle, non-invasive methods of healing to support the body natural healing processes and to treat the root cause of illness rather than just symptoms.

Department of Herbal Medicine KNUST Admission Requirement

Applicant must satisfy university’s general requirement. To be qualified for admission the prospective applicants must have the following requirements.

WASSCE/SSSCE APPLICANTS

Credit passes in Three core subjects: English Language, Mathematics and Intergrated Science or Social Studies.

Credit passes in Three (3) elective subjects: Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics.

A’ LEVEL APPLICANTS

Five (5) credits at O’ Level including English Language and Mathematics plus Three (3) A’ Level passes in Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics.

MATURE APPLICANTS

Applicants must be 25 years at the time of submitting application EITHER five (5) credits at O’ Level including English Language and Mathematics OR WASSCE/SSSCE credit passes in Three (3) elective subjects: Chemistry, Biology and Physics or Mathematics.
